Title

Newsboys sisters, newspaper article

Description

A newspaper article showing a 1914 black and white photograph of a picinic at Toledo Beach for the sisters of the early Newsboys of Toledo sponsored by John E. Gunckel. Mr. Gunckel is visible in the middle of the photograph (#10) wearing a white straw hat. Economic growth in the 1890's to the 1920's here in Toledo, Ohio created a demand for timely news delivery. Mr. Gunckel filled the need by hiring boys from poor immigrant families who needed the money to help support their families. Many Jewish boys qualified for the honor. Identified in the photo are: Fanny Ablow, Rose Mitchel, Hilda Oleson, Helen Oleson, Sadie Shinbach, Lillian Zimmerman, Hattie Gell, Hilda Zimmerman, Ethel Worts, Fannie Beckerman, Lillian Weis, Tillie Kest, Florence Shaw, Marion Shimbach, Emily Antner, Hazel Show, Sadie Klein, Lillian Ablow, Lillian Shoen, Bessie Klivans, Alice O'Brien, Jennie Rogolsky, Sarah Rogolsky, Ann Schoen, Freda Kest, and Bessie Simon.
