Eli Abramson

Eli Carl Abramson was born in New York City on October 15, 1929. His family moved to Toledo when he was a child, and he attended Sherma and Fulton Elementary Schools. He graduated from Scott High School at the age of 16, and graduated from The University of Toledo in two years. He attended medical school at The Ohio State University and married his wife Sharon Romanoff his senior year. He served in the army as an officer, and became a Battalion Regimental Surgeon in the 82nd Airborne at the age of 23. He did his residency at The University of Michigan and then settled in Toledo with his wife. He has been involved in synagogue and educational programs.

Alice and Muriel Applebaum

Muriel Applebaum was born in Toledo on August 27, 1920, and attended Whittier Elementary School and graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1938. She received her degree in Art from The University of Toledo in 1942, and then worked as a medical illustrator at Toledo Hospital's Research Department. She married Dr. Abel A. Applebaum, one of the first Jewish internists and a pioneer in cardiology in Toledo, in 1946. Much of the interview is about his many achievements, including raising money for two coronary care units in Israel. Muriel was active in Temple Shomer Emunim Sisterhood, Congregation Etz Chayim, Toledo Chapter of Hadassah, Meals on Wheels, and led the Old Orchard Girl Scout Troop for five years. She died on February 3, 2015. Alice Applebaum is her daughter, who graduated from Maumee Valley County Day School in 1965, earned her BA from The University of Michigan in 1969, and her Masters in Library Science in 1973. She has served as a librarian and archivist for years at Temple.

Melvin Conn

Melvin Conn, DDS, was born on April 17, 1921, in Toledo. He attended Scott High School, The University of Toledo, and the Dental School at The Ohio State University. Dr. Conn was a past board member of Temple Shomer Emunim, and longstanding member of the Raggedy Ass Cadets. He was a highly regarded dentist and tutored immigrants from Russia in English in the 1980s. He died on December 16, 2003.

Louis Ravin

Louis Ravin, MD, was born in Toledo, Ohio, in 1919. He attended Fulton Elementary and graduated from Scott High School in 1928 at the age of 16. After spending two years at The University of Toledo, he transferred to The Ohio State University. He finished Medical School at Detroit College of Medicine (now Wayne State University College of Medicine) with his MD in 1937. He interned at Lucas County Hospital in 1937; residency in Ophthalmology and Ear, Nose, and Throat at Beth Israel Hospital, 1937-1938; and Mount Sinai Hospital, in ophthalmology 1938-1939. Board certified in Ophthalmology, member of Academy of Medicine of Toledo and Lucas County; OSMA, and AMA. He donated funds for improvement of The University of Toledo campus and Ravin Plaza on the UT Centennial Mall. He also established a fund for needy students in the Toledo Jewish community through the Jewish Community Foundation and was a major donor to the Toledo Jewish Federation. He served in many leadership roles in Temple Shomer Emunim and the Toledo Jewish Federation. He died on December 28, 2010.

Gerald Stark

From opening screen: "Dr. Gerald Stark with Melvin K. Jacobs."(Opening screen should read Marvin K. Jacobs instead of Melvin K. Jacobs.) Gerald Stark, MD, was born on October 8, 1926 in Toledo, Ohio. He attended Scott High School, The University of Toledo, and graduated from St. Louis University Medical School in 1948. He completed his surgical training at St. Vincent Hospital in Toledo. Dr. Stark served as Second Lieutenant as an Army physician during the Korean War. He served as the Director of Surgical Education at the St. Vincent Medical Center, and helped develop and taught in the Department of Surgery at Medical College of Ohio (now UTMC, The University of Toledo Medical College). For years he participated in the charity clinics at St. Vincent Medical Center. He died on January 13, 2015.
